The
Stormy Search for the Self : A Guide to Personal
Growth Through Transformational Crisis by
Christina Grof &
Stanislav Grof , MD
Spiritual
emergencies can take the form of nonordinary
states of consciousness accompanied by intense
emotions, unusual thoughts, visions and other
sensory changes, and various physical
manifestations. These episodes often
revolve around spiritual themes, including
sequences of psychological death and rebirth,
past-life experiences, feelings of oneness with
the universe, encounters with mythological
beings, and similar motifs.
Such
dramatic spiritual opening involves, for
example, the radical clearing of various old
traumatic memories and imprints. So much
psychological material surfaces that it collides
with a person's day-to-day activity.
However, this process is by its very nature
potentially transformative. The inner
turmoil associated with spiritual emergencies is
not always symptomatic of a disease but can be
the manifestation of an inner movement this is
both healing and evolutionary.
If
properly understood and treated as difficult
stages in a natural developmental process,
spiritual emergencies can result in emotional
and psychosomatic healing, deep positive changes
in personality, and the solution to many
problems in life.

Spiritual
Emergency : When Personal Transformation Becomes
a Crisis (New Consciousness Reader)
by
Stanislav Grof (Editor) & Christina Grof
(Editor)
Increasing
numbers of people involved in personal
transformation are experiencing spiritual
emergencies--crises when the process of growth
and change becomes chaotic and
overwhelming. Individuals experiencing
such episodes may feel that their sense of
identity is breaking down, that their old values
no longer hold true, and that the very ground
beneath their personal realities is radically
shifting. In many cases, new realms of
mystical and spiritual experience enter their
lives suddenly and dramatically, resulting in
fear and confusion. They may feel
tremendous anxiety, have difficulty coping with
their daily lives, jobs and relationships and
may even fear their own sanity.
Unfortunately,
much of modern psychiatry has failed to
distinguish these episodes from mental
illness. As a result, transformational
crises are often suppressed by routine
psychiatric care, medication, and even
institutionalization.
However,
there is a new perspective developing among many
mental health professionals and those studying
spiritual development that views such crises as
transformative breakthroughs that can hold
tremendous potential for physical and emotional
healing. When understood and treated in a
supportive manner, spiritual emergencies can
become gateways to higher levels of functioning
and new ways of being.
