COMPERSION CAN BE EROTIC by Evalena Rose

Compersion is a lovely word spawned by the evolving culture of polyamory to describe the delightful sense of joy in another’s joy. Compersion means feeling happiness when your beloved is experiencing happiness with people other than you. Partners with compersion can genuinely celebrate their beloveds making love to others, knowing it will feed their love.

For me, compersion is a state of grace, a release from the mind struggling with what my lover shares. I am enriched by it. Open hearts are like mansions with abundant rooms and suites, and I know my place, if committed my master bedroom suite, is secure by the bounty we share.

Honest communication of wants, needs, fears, and boundaries make polyamory feel safe and honoring. What draws me to poly conferences is the skillful teaching of communication skills for negotiating fulfilling relationships.

Compersion seems an affair of the heart using empathy to imbibe the love and pleasure coming to one’s beloved. Savoring the flavors of their affairs together can be quite erotic. Tantra would have you breathe in their experiences, take it into your heart and down your central channel. Let it spark your kundalini and cause your own river of joy to flow - it can be a rush.

Compersion, peace, happiness, joy, and true love are fostered by coming to live in your heart and nurturing your relationship with your beloved within. It seems to go with the self-esteem and self-acceptance that comes from having done lots of work on one’s self to clear the past. The release of conditioning and tribal patterns sets one free to live in now and in union.

There is comfort in knowing you trust the love you are consciously creating, to know that the beauty you have with a partner remains yours and you’ve chosen someone who wants your happiness, even as they seek their own with compassion. Compersion is additive, with your partner bringing home new perspectives and experiences, adding to your love repertoire.

May you find the sacred grounds of compersion so that all of your relations grow to be more comfortable, mutually fulfilling, and broad enough to encompass the breadth your heart desires. Opening to more than one lover can seem like a lot of work, it is. As we evolve our capacity to communicate through NVC and other means, we make of that work light work. It’s simply speaking truth. May you speak yours and may you be heard.
